Todd Barnett —
Todd is the co-founder and
director of Field Camp. He is trained as a Wilderness First
Responder, and he teaches many of the ethics, leadership,
nature and outdoors classes at camp. Formerly the
Banfield Endowed Chair for Ethics at Landon School,
he
is currently the Head of School and Founder of Field School of
Charlottesville, a
middle school for boys. He
also consults and teaches Leadership and Ethics classes at
regional independent schools. He plays guitar and mandolin in the camp band.
He is training his dog Tupelo to answer the camp
phone when he is away, but with little success. |
|

|
Meredith Montague -
Meredith has been at Field Camp since day #1. As a
Wilderness First Responder, she teaches safety and
outdoors classes and takes practically all the
pictures for us (except the one to the left). Meredith
graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2003 with
degrees in French and history of art. When she's
not off traveling somewhere (she spent two weeks in
the Fall of 2005 in Uganda), she plays guitar and
sings in the camp band. She led the
Outdoor Leadership School with her brother David in
2005. Check out Meredith's photography
business at www.meredithmontague.com. |
|
 |
Michael Beirne -- Michael used to
come to camp, now he's a counselor. He is a junior at the
University of Richmond where he is enjoying himself
immensely. He is
probably our most traveled counselor, and he was named "Best
Dressed" at the 2003 Field Camp Day games. Michael
has been at Field Camp since our first year.
|
|
 |
Carling
Klalo -- Carling is our first
camper-turned-counselor. She
knows all the camp songs by
heart, plays them regularly in her Toyota Forerunner, and
lately she is picking up guitar. Carling has also been at
Field Camp since our first year.
|
|
 |
Robert
Mosolgo-Clark
-- Robert,
pictured to the left with Carling,
spent his first summer as a CIT in '03 after many years with
us as a camper. In 2004, he won the counselor division
of the inaugural Elijahball tournament, and he competes with
Elijah as our best chess player year in-year out. He has been at
Field Camp for a large part of his life, going back to 2000. |
|

|
David Montague - Dave headed our
Leadership School in 2005 with his sister Meredith. Dave has been working as a guide in
Maine for the past five years and is an avid hunter, fisherman,
backpacker, canoeist, trapper, sailor, seakayaker, birdwatcher,
and outdoor enthusiast. He can usually be found straining his
neck to look at birds or staring intently at an ant or beetle or
lizard. He is also a graduate of NOLS Patagonia, a Wilderness
First Responder, and a Leave No Trace Trainer.
|
|
 |
Ralph
Geilker - Ralph has
been at Field Camp since 2004. He was also present at the
first Leadership School in 2004 and the second in 2005. Born
and bred in C’ville, he currently attends Charlottesville
High School where he is a member of the band. At camp, Ralph enjoys playing Bartball and
capture the flag, where he crushes, so make sure you get on
his team. |
|
 |
Catherine Wilkerson - A junior at Tandem Friends
School, Catherine has been at Field Camp since the first
year. An actress, she re-created several moving scenes
during the Summer of 2006, such as "Where's My Binky?" and
the unforgettable, "Falling Off Top Bunk." |
|
 |
Elijah Kirsch -- Elijah was a camper
in our first-ever week of camp back in 2000, and he is now in his
second year at U.Va. having moved back recently from Austin,
Texas. He is a wonderful pal to his little brother Finny
and he plays a mean game of chess. Elijah was one of the
fifteen people present at the first day of Field Camp in
2000, and he is a legend on the aptly named Elijahball
courts. |
|
|
Andrew
Junkin joined us in
2007 after graduating from U.Va. He quickly
established himself as the man to beat in contests such as
innertube bowling and cornhole. After making a brief
and critically performance as our 32nd president, he started
teaching Chemistry at E.C. Glass HS in
Lynchburg. |
|
|
Scott
Martin goes way
back at Field Camp, way back. After returning
regularly on Thursday nights over the last few years, he
finally found his calling as an actor in Geilker and Duva's
production of "The New Kid" where he played a
protective counselor. Scott goes to U.Va. |
|
|
Charlotte
Hornsby
-- Charlotte
started working as a counselor in 2005 and won the
women's counselor division in the storied Elijahball
tournament. A film student at NYU, she likes good music,
and she even knows all the words to "Buttercup."
When in town, she likes to hang out on the downtown mall and
eat at Eppie's. If you're googling her and find her
here, tell her to get started on her entry for the Field Camp
Film Fest 2008. Also, tell her, and her family, not to
change that phone message. |
|
|
Taylor
Guss - A sophomore
at Saint Anne’s Belfield School in Charlottesville,
Taylor was present at the very first week of Field
Camp as well as the first Field Camp Day and Pirate’s Day. He
enjoys running, paintball, and camping, and in recent
capture-the-flag games pitting the campers against the
counselors, he has, at times, been the lone counselor
holding off the campers seemingly for hours. |
|
Old Counselors
who still show up from time to time...
|
|
 |
Leah Montgomery -- Leah is now
teaching at math at Tandem Friends School. At Field Camp,
she taught our arts and crafts classes, and brought her two dogs,
Bella and Gus,
along on our hikes. |
|
 |
George Craddock
-- A man who loves both dead sardines and advanced
capture-the-flag strategy, George joined the FC staff in 2005,
just after badly stubbing his toe in Myanmar. A native of
Charlottesville and a 2004 graduate of Princeton, he has gone
over to the "dark side," after teaching at Landon for several
years. Come to think of it, he also does great
impressions. |
|
|
Meredyth Haas - A third-year student at U.Va.,
Meredyth came to Field Camp in 2006, and promptly
distinguished herself by winning the girl's counselor division
Elijahball tourney and helping her team to victory in the
counselor hoops game. A woman with her own Sam's Club
card, she also has an uncanny ability to shape ground beef
into works of art.
|
|
 |
Mimi
Pohl -- Mimi started working at Field Camp as a counselor
and for our Leadership Program in 2004. Her previous job
had been as a trainer of killer whales at Sea World in Orlando.
She is an avid runner and biker, and was often seen riding to
and from Free Union in the mornings and afternoons in the Summer
of 2004. She and her husband Frank and their daughter Anna
live in Charlottesville. She kicks butt, really.
|
|
 |
Darren
Ball -- Darren also began at Field Camp in 2004 as a
counselor and director in the Leadership School. He had
been a graduate student in education at U.Va., and came to us
after successful stints as a camp director in North Carolina.
Darren competed in a triathlon this summer, and when he's not in
Charlottesville, you can probably find him in Pisgah National
Forest. He is currently working for the MS Foundation in
Charlottesville. |
|
 |
Jay Fennell
—
A graduate of Transylvania University, Jay co-founded and
co-directed the Field Camp through the summer of 2002. Jay and Erika Thelen were married in the summer of 2003,
and they are the parents of two boys, Jed and Lio. |
|
 |
Erika
Thelen Fennell--A recent graduate of UVA, Erika worked from our first
summer through 2002 and ran the Field Camp News among many
other things. She is is currently working
for a vet in Crozet. See the bio just above (Jay
Fennell) for more
information. |
|
 |
Scotty Waylett -- A graduate of St.
Anne's-Belfield School,
Scotty used to organize games at
camp and give guitar lessons. He does a mean
Forrest Gump version of our camp song, and played guitar in the
camp band. Scotty worked from the first year of camp
through 2002, after which he moved to Aspen, a small skiing town,
reputedly in California. He returned briefly in 2003 to lead a
hike at Riprap. We hope to see him again in the future.
And Scott, if you're reading this, give me a
ring. |

 |
Ms.
Peggy Boutilier—Formerly a third grade teacher at the Venable School, Peggy
was a standout athlete at the University of Virginia, gaining All-American
distinction in both lacrosse and field hockey, and named Player of the Year in
1998.
She was also honored the following year for her athletic and academic
accomplishments when she won the 1998 NCAA Woman of the Year
Award.
Peggy also coached the Charlottesville High School women’s
lacrosse team. She and her husband their two boys live
in C-ville. |
|
 |
Gretchen Goodrich - Gretchen just finished her fourth
year as a biology major at UVA and she will receive her
masters in secondary science education after student
teaching this fall. She comes from Freeport, Maine and
enjoys traveling and lots of outdoor activities, such as
hiking, camping, running, and swimming. |
|
 |
Bart McIntosh
-- A man who has been to the lowest point in the United
States, Bart started as a counselor in the Summer of 2002. A standout soccer player in high school, he is now a
senior at the University of
Colorado at Boulder.
